We find the amount of signage clutter in the average retail outlet really quite annoying. Not only does the proliferation of supplied and homemade POS destroy the promotional messages, but the architect’s vision of a distinctive clean store is a blur that puts off shoppers too – the very people that they are supposed to lure.
While on the subject of this general beef, it goes almost without saying that paper signage does not last either. Within no time at all , it is inevitably hanging crookedly off a piece of scotch tape and likely displaying outdated information. I find this retail habit difficult to understand – the only worse things are those crudely festive sprayed-on season signs that nobody ever returns to remove.
When we speak to retail outlet owners, they tell us that their suppliers of the goods they are selling in their stores supply the majority of their POS and it all looks the same and very rarely do the receive a POS that stands out as different, better and special. It is as much the suppliers fault for supplying standard POS that simply blends in, as the storeowners not asking for something different, thus we all have to put up with the blur white noise pollution.
